Does Charlotte have a sound? This will help?

Do you have to go to Nashville or LA to make a Great Album? Did you know Charlotte is home to some of the country’s best composers and musicians? A music
album featuring some of Charlotte’s best writers, musicians and singers could be called Charlotte’s Own or Charlotte Zone or both! — especially If it is encouraged by one of Charlotte’s world-class recording studios, Vocal Ink Production, and promoted by Charlotte’s one-of-a-kind video/music venues—VisArt Video [501(C)3]

Ask Fred Story, multiple Emmy winner and owner of STORYLINE Music+Mix, where he finds world-class musicians to bring life to his movie scores, and he’ll tell you he starts with “Charlotte’s own.” When Jim Gleeson was looking for musicians for his CHARLOTTEZOWN showcase of the Charlotte music scene, Tim Campbell, owner of Vocal Ink Studios, suggested asking Fred Story for recommendations. Gleeson described his project to Mr. Story. “Thanks for reaching out to me,” Fred responded. “Kudos, this sounds like an extremely worthwhile endeavor!”

Story recommended starting with Charlotte’s legendary sax virtuoso, Tim Gordon, as well as violinist extraordinaire and co-owner of Charlotte’s The Violin Shop, Glen Alexander. Gleeson had the idea of adding saxophone to a moody rendition of The Cars ‘80s hit, Drive. Tim Gordon came into Vocal Ink Studios, and when you hear the result, you’ll know why Tim Gordon is legendary. Weeks later, Glen Alexander added the same musical magic to Gleeson’s It Will Roll. The album was off to a great start! “One evening as I was on my way out of Vocal Ink,” said Gleeson, “I introduced myself to a man making coffee in the break room. That man turned out to be Cedric Thompson, Grammy-winning musician and producer. Mr. Thompson has since added strings, organ and piano to four of the album’s original songs.

Also featured on CharlotteZown are local Singer/songwriter Nancy Jones and tenor Kyle Geraghty. Guitarist, Michael Montella “jazzed up” the Kingston Trio’s Scotch and Soda. Veteran musician, Jim Ruth, added clarinet and Dixieland banjo, together with Cedric Thompson’s strings to the nearly five-minute (Gimme that Good Ol’) Mountain Opus. Charlotte Symphony arranger, Alan Kaufman added orchestral touches to Gleeson’s Facing the Music and modified calliope to Merry Go Round.

On May 21st at 7:30, VisArt Video, 3104 Eastway Drive, will host the musical event of the season celebrating the release of Gleeclub, CharlotteZown, a combination of music, video, live performance, and introductions of the featured artists.
